In Class AAAAA, Sequoyah protected its No. 1 status with a 3-2 win over Columbus in the state championship. Columbus jumped from No. 3 to No. 2 with their hard-fought finals match with the Chiefs. River Ridge lost to Sequoyah in the playoffs but beat the Chiefs in the Area championship earlier and jumped to No. 3. Dunwoody fell from No. 2 to No. 4 after its loss to Columbus in the semifinals. Cambridge cracked the top 5 for the first time this season after pushing Columbus to a fifth set in an outstanding quarterfinals matchup.
With an 18-panel design inspired by a volleyball, the Crack was a chrome coloured ball that had a smoother, rounder surface (and hence better, more uniform behaviour) than any other World Cup match ball. It was also the last World Cup ball to be provided by a locally tendered company, with Senor Custodio Zamora of San Miguel charged with producing it especially for the tournament. Unfortunately, due to issues with abrasion, brittleness and waterlogging, the Crack was dismissed as inadequate by players and officials alike, leading to a variety of hastily sourced alternatives being used throughout the tournament instead.
JACKSON -- Like a well-oiled machine with all the parts working, Jackson County Central's high school volleyball team was clicking on all cylinders Thursday night and the Huskies won a key Southwest Conference match over the rival Windom Eagles.
"We did graduate six top contributors from last year," said VanEpps. "But, we gained six awesome players from last season's B-squad -- which only lost one match all year -- and we are playing good volleyball."
JCC's lead increased to 17-7 after junior outside hitter Sarah Darling cracked a spike through a Windom block attempt and later took a 19-9 advantage after its lone senior -- outside hitter Courtney Donnelli powered a kill to the floor.
The girls volleyball program has battled through its fair share of obstacles since winning the CCS Division III Volleyball Championship and playing their last game against Lowell High School on Nov. 16, 2019 in the NorCal playoffs.
Originally a Season 1 sport permitted to play in the orange tier, girls volleyball was set to start in December. This was deterred by the holiday COVID-19 surge and the program found itself conditioning on the field through much of the fall of 2020 until Feb. 24, when they got the green light to condition in the gym.
That offensive line has done its job and the consistently quick Byers has done the rest, to slip through the cracks they create. He toted the ball 29 times Saturday, averaging 7.1 yards a carry. He also scored twice to take sole possession of the Division II lead in rushing touchdowns with 13.
Two minutes later, a fast addition onto the scoreboard was garnered by the hosts from Shae Maples, who scored a goal of her own off another pass from center, this time from Sofia Riquelme to help take a 2-0 lead at the break. The lead would then become cut straight in half just five minutes into the final session, with McKinlee Harris working her way onto the score sheet for the Lady Wolverines (1-2).
Friendship/Scio (0-2-1) would work their way onto the scoreboard with 10 minutes remaining, eliminating the shutout with assistance from Jenn Dickens. In goal, Preslee Miller would make two saves to earn the win for Fillmore.

The Bruins won the first dual, 5-0, at the Monterey Invitational, hosted by San Jose State on March 18, 2017. UCLA also posted a 5-0 win over the Lopes at the FIU Surf-N-Turf in Miami, Fla., on March 31, 2018. Long Beach State: This is the 12th meeting between UCLA and LBSU with the Bruins leading the all-time series, 7-4, after winning the last seven duals. The 49ers won the first four duals of the series from 2013-15. But the Bruins turned the tide starting with a 3-2 victory in the season opener on March 5, 2016 at the Pepperdine Kick-Off in Malibu, Calif. The Bruins have swept LBSU three times, most recently last year at home on April 4, 2018. UCLA also posted a 4-1 win at Long Beach State last year on April 19, 2018.RECAPPING THE LAST OUTINGSThe Bruins capped a 5-1 week, rebounding after its first loss of the year, closing out the Pac-12 North Invitational with a 4-1 win at No. 19 Stanford (9-12) on April 7 at Stanford Beach Volleyball Stadium to improve to 26-1 on the year. The Bruins began the week with a pair of 4-1 home wins over No. 13 Loyola Marymount and No. 2 USC. Then UCLA headed to Stanford, Calif., to compete in the Pac-12 North Invitational, posting a 5-0 win over Washington and a 4-1 win over No. 12 California on Saturday, April 6. The Bruins concluded the tournament with a 2-3 setback to No. 2 USC and a 4-1 win at No. 19 Stanford on Sunday, April 7.TOUGH SCHEDULEUCLA is facing another tough schedule in 2019 as 24 of its 29 opponents during the regular season are currently ranked in the latest AVCA Top 20 Poll. During the regular season, the Bruins are currently slated to play 15 duals against teams ranked in the Top 10 with 10 of them currently in the Top 5. Of the five duals scheduled against unranked teams, four are receiving votes and one, Saint Mary's, cracked the Top 20 after the Bruins defeated them in the first week of competition. Only one opponent, Oregon on March 26, is not receiving votes in this week's AVCA Top 20 Poll.RECAPPING 2018UCLA won its first-ever NCAA Championship in beach volleyball in 2018 with an overall record of 40-4 (.909). The 40 wins were a school and NCAA single-season record. UCLA also won a school-record 31 consecutive duals during the 2018 campaign and won its first-ever Pac-12 Conference Championship, defeating the defending champions USC twice on the same day to win the title. The Bruins beat the best all season long with 33 of their 40 victories coming in wins over nationally-ranked teams and going 5-1 on the year against the defending NCAA Champions, USC. Additionally, all four losses on the year were to teams ranked in the top four. During the school-record winning streak, the Bruins swept 17 opponents (5-0, one truncated in NCAAs) with 26 of the 31 victories coming against ranked teams (13 of them ranked in the top 10 and seven of them ranked in the top five). The streak came to an end when No. 4 Florida State defeated top-seeded UCLA, 3-1, in the second match of the 2018 NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship. Additionally, then-junior Izzy Carey and then-freshman Megan Muret set the UCLA record for most consecutive match victories on any court at 28. The streak was snapped by USC's Alexandria Poletto and Haley Hallgren in three sets in the winner's bracket final of the Pac-12 Championship, 12-21, 21-17, 15-12 (tied the dual at 1-1, UCLA eventually won the dual 3-2, and then defeated USC again, 3-1, in the title game to win its first Pac-12 Championship).FAMILIAR FACESThe 2019 UCLA starting lineup should be very familiar as the Bruins return 9-of-10 starters from a year ago on the five courts. Courts 1 (seniors Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara), 2 (junior Lily Justine and senior Sarah Sponcil), and 5 (senior Izzy Carey and sophomore Megan Muret) all return. The Bruins took court 3 (senior Zana Muno and junior Savvy Simo) and split up the dynamic duo. Muno is currently paired with freshman Abby Van Winkle, the only newcomer to crack the top 10, and is on court 3. Simo is paired with sophomore Mac May and is on court 4. UCLA said goodbye to only one senior that played last year, Elise Zappia. Zappia was paired with May on court 4 for most of the 2018 season.HALL OF FAME MENTORSU.S. Olympian and UCLA Hall of Famer Stein Metzger is in his seventh season at the helm of the UCLA Beach Volleyball program. He sports an overall record of 136-39 (.777) and has gone 96-11 (.897) in the last two-plus seasons (2017-19). His 100th career victory came in a 4-1 win at No. 13 Stanford on April 8, 2018. Metzger was named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year in 2017 and 2018 and was also named the USMC/AVCA National Coach of the Year in both of those seasons. Metzger now has four NCAA Championships to his credit (three as a player in 1993, 1995 and 1996 and one as a coach in 2018).Entering her sixth year with the Bruins, Assistant Coach Jenny Johnson Jordan is also a U.S. Olympian and a recent UCLA Hall of Fame inductee (Oct. 5, 2018). Like Metzger, Jordan has also won NCAA titles as both a player (1991) and a coach (2018). Jordan was also recently inducted into the CBVA Hall of Fame (Nov. 3, 2018).BRUINS COMPLETE COACHING STAFF WITH POLLOCKFormer TCU standout and current professional beach volleyball player, Irene Pollock, joins the Bruins' beach volleyball staff in 2019 as the Volunteer Assistant Coach. Pollock replaces Jeff Alzina, who was named the Associate Head Coach for indoor volleyball and beach volleyball at Santa Clara on Feb. 8, 2019.BRUINS IN THE POLLSUCLA enters the week ranked at No. 1 in the AVCA and DiG Magazine Top 20 Polls for the eighth straight week in 2019. The Bruins have been ranked for 39 straight weeks in the AVCA Poll, dating back to the preseason poll of 2016. UCLA earned its first-ever No. 1 ranking in program history (Mar. 26, 2018) after knocking off then No. 1 Pepperdine. UCLA is one of only four programs in the history of the AVCA Poll to be ranked No. 1 (USC-25 weeks, Pepperdine-17 weeks, UCLA-13 weeks, Hawai'i-one week). Additionally, UCLA has been ranked in the top five for 39 consecutive weeks and has been nationally ranked in 55 of 56 all-time polls by the AVCA.SWEEPING SUCCESSThe Bruins have swept 15 opponents in the 26 victories during the 2019 season. Of the 15 sweeps, 10 have been against teams ranked in the Top 20 (#11 Stanford, #11 California, #19 TCU, #13 Loyola Marymount) and six have been against teams ranked in the Top 10 (#6 Cal Poly, #5 Hawai'i, at #3 Pepperdine, #5 Pepperdine, #10 Stetson, and at #8 FIU). An additional four teams were receiving votes at the time (Saint Mary's, now ranked #18, Arizona State and Washington twice).A TOUGH OUTWhile UCLA is 120-15 (.889) across all five flights in 2019, they have been beaten in straight sets six times (twice at flights one and two and once at flights three and four). But the Bruins have won in straight sets in 101 of their 107 flight victories (101-6 in two-set matches, .944). The Bruins have also had success in three-set matches, going a combined 19-9 (.679) in the third set (3-0 at flight one, 3-1 at flight two, 7-4 at flight three, 5-2 at flight five, and 1-2 at flight four).COURT FOUR'S MONKHOUSE/SIMO NAMED PAC-12 PAIR OF THE WEEKUCLA junior Savvy Simo (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. / Torrey Pines HS) and sophomore Lea Monkhouse (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada / Lorne Park Secondary) have been named the Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Pair of the Week as announced by the league office on April 9. Simo and Monkhouse helped UCLA go 5-1 on the week as the Bruins split a pair of duals with # 2 USC. Other team wins came against #13 Loyola Marymount, #12 California, #19 Stanford and Washington. The pair was the only pair between USC and UCLA to go undefeated at 6-0 on the week while not dropping a set and allowing just one opponent in only one set to score more than 16 points. The duo is 22-5 on the year and has won nine-consecutive matches, all in straight sets, with eight coming against ranked teams and five against teams in the top 10. It is the first-career honor for the pair and the second-straight UCLA duo to earn the weekly nod. It is also the 11th weekly honor for the Bruins all-time. 2ff7e9595c
